David Tomb
Rogues, Gallery
(New Works)
October 3 – November 1, 2003

The William-Scott Gallery is pleased to present Rogues‚ Gallery, new works by San Francisco portrait artist David Tomb. For the past fifteen years Tomb has embraced the discipline of the formal portrait, but abandoned its historical convention, choosing to infuse his work with a fresh contemporary edge that speaks to the present. Always working directly from life, his expressionistic portrayals of friends and acquaintances are executed with virtuosic gestural intensity. Each piece conveys the unique vitality of its subject, revealing the sitter‚s underlying emotional and psychological conflicts. Tomb‚s portraits can be quiet and contemplative, or aggressive and confrontational. The artist delights in his chosen media (charcoal, gouache, ink and watercolor). He often incorporates abstract and invented forms, extolling the beauty of pure mark making and pattern. Tomb‚s works assimilate stylistic tropes from a pantheon of canonical portrait painters, from Francis Bacon, to Lucian Freud, to Alice Neel.
