Jeff Soderbergh
"Steel Tea House"

Soderbergh creates his distinctive furniture and sculpture with materials dating between 1700 and 1940, combining wood, metal, and glass to produce contemporary, innovative designs imbued with history and nostalgia. A consummate craftsman, Soderbergh respects the origins of his materials while simultaneously breathing new life into them. The artist explains, “It is greatly important to me that we recognize the elegant, simple beauty that our historical buildings offer. My goal is to capture a moment in history, utilize its craftsmanship and style, and then enhance its beauty with modern textures, materials, and design.” Examples of Soderbergh’s inventive designs include a chaise lounge fashioned from the curvature of a baby grand piano, a side table made from a corbel with Queen Anne style legs, a low bench created from a soapstone chemistry lab table complete with hand cut nesting bowls in Honduras mahogany, and mirrors framed in nail distressed antique framing lumber.

Soderbergh has shown extensively on the east coast at venues including the Bristol Art Museum and the Newport Art Museum in RI, juried fine furnishings shows in Philadelphia, PA, Providence, RI, and the Paradise City Art Festival in Northampton, MA. In 2002 he was the recipient of the Mark Harrison award for “Best in Show” at the Providence Fine Furnishings show.
