Michael Page

Page's oil and wax paintings utilize texture and reductive shapes to add depth and motion to otherwise minimalist surfaces. Embracing aspects of both Abstract Expressionist and Minimalist painting, Page's work relies on the timeless, mythic qualities of simple, archaic shapes, the serene, meditative characteristics of pure color, and the luscious subtlety of carefully textured surfaces. Ultimately, his paintings create a quiet, contemplative, and transcendental environment.

The artist's work often reflects the myths and places he has encountered during nearly two decades of extensive travel. Page explains, „I have tried to convey the inherent beauty and serenity found in the isolation of places like the ruins of the Angkor environs of Cambodia, the stark coasts of northern Scotland, Cape Cod during winter, and particularly the barren landscapes of Iceland. Artists Einar Jonsson and Johannes Kjarval, who so masterfully captured the spirit of their Icelandic homeland, have also provided me with profound inspiration.

Also included in the exhibition will be a handful of Page's sculptures. Beginning with found wood and metal distressed by time and the elements, Page then adds components which enhance and compliment the form and flow of the original object. The shadows cast by his sculptural works are an important consideration during their creation, as they themselves become an integral part of the piece.
