New Works By
Chet Jones & Harry Folsom
August 1 –13, 2003

The William-Scott Gallery is pleased to present new works by Chet Jones and Harry Folsom, on view August 1 – 13, 2003.   Provincetown-based artist Chet Jones paints luminous conceptualized landscapes, while Harry Folsom’s expressionistic paintings depict a motley crew of idiosyncratic characters.  An artists’ reception will be held on Friday, August 1st from 7 to 9pm.

According to painter Chet Jones, “light is a living presence that supports everything,” and the artist bases his work on the simple act of looking at light.  His compositions most often feature the façade of a singular house perched on a bare horizon.  The geometric structure of the house acts as a point of departure from which Jones embarks on an intuitive exploration of color and luminosity.  Through the process of creating these minimal, concise, and iconic pieces, the artist achieves a visceral connection to the work that reaches beyond the level of conscious thinking.

Jones has been painting professionally since 1981.  He majored in art at Boston College, and attended art school in Florence, Italy.  In addition to his many local exhibitions, Jones’ work has been shown in New York at the National Academy Museum.  His work is included in both public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe.

Folsom fills his canvases with expressionistic intensity, often first creating a tumultuous, frantic underpainting upon which he places his subjects, using this perhaps as a metaphor for the human condition in contemporary society.  He invents bizarre characters—they grit their teeth, laugh out loud and grimace—whose provocative natures arrest the viewer’s attention and elicit an immediate emotional response.  He paints both the landscape and inanimate objects with the same exuberant energy and vitality that emanate from his character studies.
