The gallery is the most recent member of the vibrant arts community in Boston’s SOWA (South of Washington Street) district in the South End. After eight successful seasons in Provincetown, MA, the expansion to a second location enables the gallery to have a year-round presence.

The Boston venue gives us the opportunity to showcase additional artists, further enhancing our exhibition schedule, and allowing us to reach a larger audience. Representing a diverse group of contemporary local and national artists working in a wide range of media and techniques, the William-Scott Gallery’s programming encompasses work that is eclectic in style, thus catering to a broad audience and clientele. Current artists include Kelly Bennett, John Dowd, Chet Jones, Will Klemm, Keith Maddy, Nancy Nicholson, and Steve Smulka.

The Boston gallery’s inaugural exhibition, John Dowd: Boston Series, on view February 7 to March 1, 2003, features a new suite of paintings by Dowd exploring the city’s disrupted and ever-evolving urban landscape. Painting in the realist tradition, Dowd is best known for his expert handling of light and his precise rendering of architectural detail. Devoid of human presence, his canvases are often dominated by dramatic, luminous, and ethereal skies, which combine with complex architectural elements and evocative shadows, to create a sense of mystery and nostalgia reminiscent of the work of Edward Hopper. Dowd has been represented by the William-Scott Gallery in Provincetown since its inception, and is renown for his annual Labor Day exhibition, as well as the reproduction of one of his works each year as the ubiquitous Provincetown summer poster.

The William-Scott Galley is located at 450 Harrison Avenue at the corner of Thayer Street, on the third floor, suite #318. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 to 5:30, and by appointment. Accessible by public transportation via the Orange Line New England Medical Center station and the new Silver Line bus, there is also ample parking available.
