New Works By
Daphne Confar and John Clayton
July 18 - 30, 2003

The William-Scott Gallery is pleased to present new works by Daphne Confar and John Clayton on view July 18 - 30, 2003.  While Confar paints small realist portraits, Clayton’s  impressionistic paintings capture the natural beauty of Cape Cod.  These complementary solo exhibitions showcase the distinct talents of each artist and offer the audience a wide range of style and focus.  An artists’ reception will be held on Friday, July 18th from 7 to 9pm.

Daphne Confar places the subjects of her intimate, quirky portraits in austere landscapes, or the most minimal interiors, focusing the viewer’s attention on her exquisite and sensitive rendering of these characters.  Confar’s evocative titles, such as “Charlie Once Dated Miss Mississippi,” “Zosia Dreams Big,” and “Ron is Perfectly Content,” bring intrigue and vitality to her subjects who stare out at the viewer, often appearing vulnerable and isolated.

Ms. Confar has gallery affiliations on both coasts, with recent exhibitions at Peter Blake Gallery in Laguna Beach, CA and the Pepper Gallery in Boston, MA.  Her work is included in many public and private collections.  She received her M.F.A. from Boston University in 2000..

Painting en plein air whenever possible, John Clayton's themes range from the local landscapes of Provincetown and Truro to the streets of Europe, where he has traveled extensively. He creates an unexpected palette in the colorist tradition, sun-drenched and dreamlike. His brush stroke is always evident, loose and animated, instilling his compositions with life and revealing his joy for painting.

John Clayton’s work was recently featured in the Emerging Artists exhibition at the Provincetown Art Association. He studied at Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, and in New York at the Art Student's League, and the National Academy of Design. He has received two scholarship awards from the Mrs. Robert Forbes Foundation, and an honorable mention from the Academy of Fine Arts exhibition in 1998.

The William-Scott Gallery is located at 439 Commercial Street in the heart of Provincetown’s East End gallery district.  All exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public.  For more information please call Almitra Stanley, Director, at (508) 487-4040.
