Lehrer’s exhibition features a series of whimsical, dog portraits executed in oils on an intimate scale.  Depicting his canine subjects in mysterious and sometimes mythical settings, the paintings offer a rich and complex narratives.  In contrast, Sandra Jones Campbell’s show, “Dinner Theater,” features large acrylics portraying groups of boisterous revelers.  Painted in broad, expressionistic strokes, utilizing a highly saturated palette, Jones Campbell creates energy and excitement.  Please join us for a reception for both artists Friday, August 13 from 7 to 9PM.

Realist painter Damon Lehrer’s masterful draftsmanship recalls the expressive eloquence, poetic sensibility, and intensity of Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo artists.   His whimsical tendencies are epitomized by his ongoing series of canine paintings, which address their subjects in self-consciously sentimental, affectionate, and sometimes bizarre ways. Lehrer’s work has been exhibited internationally.  Venues include the Fuller Museum in Brockton, MA, the Pepper Gallery and the Chase Gallery, both in Boston, the Jenkins Johnson Gallery in San Francisco, CA, and the Tatistcheff Gallery in New York City.  In Great Britain, Lehrer has shown at Harvey Nichols, London, the Beaux Arts Gallery in Bath, and at Jenner's in Edinburgh.  His work is held in numerous collections including the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, MA, the Boston Public Library, and New York Public Library in New York City.  Lehrer holds an M.F.A. from Boston University, was apprentice to the sculptor Philip Grausman in Washington, CT, and received his B.A. from Amherst College.  In 2000 he was awarded the prestigious Massachusetts Cultural Council artist’s grant.

California artist Sandra Jones Campbell’s depiction of social and political scenes reflect both her professional respect for the 30’s style German Expressionists Max Beckmann, George Grosz and Otto Dix, as well as her uniquely gentle wit.  Multiple figures populate her lively acrylic paintings.  She often employs a personal perspective in her portrayal of various social scenes, which then become imbued with Jones Campbell’s own psychological and sociological belief systems.  Her work is at once playful and sophisticated.  Jones Campbell is represented by the Attic Gallery in Portland, OR and the Pacific Edge Gallery in Laguna Beach, CA.  In 1997 she was the “First Award Winner” in the South California Open Juried exhibition at the Laguna Art Museum in 1997, and the “Gold Medal Winner” in the Wine Label Artistry Competition.  Her work is included in the collections of the Hilton Hotels in Eugene and Portland, OR, the Piper Sonoma Winery and J Winery, both in Healdsberg, CA
