MICHAEL PAGE
Michael
Page’s paintings utilize texture and reductive shapes to
add depth and motion to otherwise minimalist surfaces. Embracing
aspects of both Abstract Expressionist and Minimalist painting,
Page’s work relies on the timeless, mythic qualities of
simple, archaic shapes, the serene, meditative characteristics
of pure color, and the luscious subtlety of carefully textured
surfaces. Influenced by the humbling effect of isolation
experienced on the barren landscapes of Iceland, northern Scotland,
and Tibet, these works explore the inherent serenity of solitude,
reflecting places both physical and psychological where the unquiet
mind may find temporary refuge and respite. For Page, painting
has become a form of meditation and the state of equilibrium
the artist experiences while creating has become the cornerstone
of the work.
Not having completed a formal fine arts education, Page’s methods of construction
and fabrication are largely self-taught. He has shown in Provincetown at the
Musselman Gallery, Tristan Gallery, and the Provincetown Art Association and
Museum. Page attended the School of Visual Arts in NYC.
